The boardroom secret that changed my career

What I learned in the room where promotions are decided

I’ll let you in on a secret.

The reason I’m so passionate about helping mid-career professionals get noticed isn’t just because I was you—stuck in the middle, quietly doing good work while others leapfrogged ahead.

It’s because of what I saw behind the scenes.

For a few years, I was an HR data analyst, trusted enough to sit in on the meetings where the most senior leaders made career-defining decisions. My job was simple: look up data, run reports, and keep my poker face on.

But what I heard in those rooms was… shocking.

Take one colleague of mine. To me (and many others), she was the last person I’d consider high potential—she missed deadlines, deflected blame, and did the bare minimum. Yet in those rooms, she was spoken about as if she were a rising star.

“Brilliant.”
“A great collaborator.”
“Building incredible relationships across the business.”

And because of that, she was fast-tracked—promotions every year or two, high-visibility international assignments, glowing reviews.

Meanwhile, the rest of us were left picking up the pieces of her unfinished work.

This was my wake-up call:

  • Perception is reality.
It didn’t matter that her actual work left much to be desired. What mattered was the story senior leaders believed about her—and that story was built on relationships.

  • Your boss may not be enough.
The people truly influencing your career path might never see your day-to-day work.

  • Visibility is a strategy, not luck.
If you don’t have a plan for how others see you, you’re relying on chance.

Here’s the thing—once I saw this, I realized I could play the game… but in my own way.

I didn’t need to become the office schmoozer.
I didn’t need to fake it.

What I needed was a relationship strategy—a way to build visibility that paired my real strengths with intentional connections.

And that single shift—from doing great work alone to doing great work that was seen—changed everything for me.

If you’re tired of being the best-kept secret on your team…

If you feel like you’ve been overlooked while others (maybe even the wrong people) get promoted…

Then start with this question: “Who needs to see my work to open doors for me?”

If you’re not sure how to answer that—or how to build a visibility strategy that feels authentic—then that’s exactly what I help people do.
